PRINCIPAL'S REFLECTION
Dear Parents and friends,
R U OK?
Jesus said:
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10).”
There is no doubt this year has been one like no other. As COVID-19 continues to impact the health and well-being of many Australians, it is more important than ever to take a moment to check up on your loved ones, and learn to recognise the signs.
During Suicide Prevention Month, which started yesterday with R U OK? Day, we are encouraged to ask those in our lives the simple question of whether they are okay, giving them an invitation to speak about their struggles.
While we are often quite good at recognising and empathising with the physical suffering of others, we can often be oblivious to their internal sufferings, because we cannot see them.
If we are called to be the presence of Christ in the world, then our outreach to others needs to be one which assists them in having life in abundance. This week and month let's take a few minutes in our busy lives to let those around you know they’re appreciated and that we are there to help.
- Simply ask someone, “Are you OK?”.
- Really listen to their response. Let them know you’re there to help them and that they are really being heard.
- Encourage action as sufferers of mental health issues can find it difficult to seek help on their own.
- Follow up with the person you have helped. Let them know you’re still there to help.
As Don Ritchie, Angel of the gap said, "Never be afraid to speak to those who you feel are in need. Always remember the power of the simple smile, a helping hand, a listening ear and a kind word.”
Yours in Faith, Justice and Learning
