Remembrance Day – originally known as Armistice Day – marks the day when the guns on the Western Front fell silent as the German leaders signed an Armistice at 11am on November 11, 1918, bringing an end to four years of bloody warfare.
As a mark of respect for those who fought, died and suffered in World War I, Australians are encouraged to pause at 11:00am and observe a minute’s silence and in other Commonwealth nations similar traditions take place.
We pause not just for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but those who suffered life-changing injuries, for families of lost loved ones and those supporting families returning from war.
Unfortunately the ‘war to end all wars’ did not stop further conflict. The events in Eastern Europe and Israel and Gaza fill us with such sadness that this sacrifice and trauma continues to impact people’s lives. Therefore, today is not only about remembering the sacrifice of our past but also a chance to reaffirm our belief about the importance of peace for the future of all. And so we pray,
God of light and salvation, our refuge and our strength, we pray for the people of Israel and Palestine amid the escalating violence.
We pray for those killed and injured by rockets from Gaza in southern Israel. May your rod and staff comfort them. We pray for those who are grieving. May they know your ever-present help.
We pray for the protection of those who have been taken hostage by Hamas. As they walk through this dark valley, may they fear no evil.
We pray for the civilians of Gaza. May they know that their help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.
And we pray for those in leadership in Gaza and Israel. May you guide them along the right paths.
We ask all this in union with Christ and trusting in the power of your Holy Spirit.
SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION
The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23)
Last Sunday’s gospel once again led us to reflect on the notion of servanthood and humility in leadership. It leads me to consider the current state of various parts of our world, the suffering, injustices and tragedies. How devastated we all are to witness the disregard for human life and dignity, even involving children and the most vulnerable. We feel at a loss to understand how these events and decisions by fellow humans come about and how the violence and destruction can possibly be justified. We ask, “How can we help?”, “What do we do about this?”, indeed, “Is there anything we can do?”
Our Christian faith causes most of us to turn to Jesus at times like these. How clearly he demonstrated what it meant to be humble, with the loving actions of a servant, even as he gave his life for his convictions of love and peace. The simple but so impactful act of washing his disciples feet reminds us of the humility that Jesus preached and demonstrated. Although he was considered ‘Master’ and ‘Teacher’, he humbled himself to show us the true meaning of leadership, rejecting the power and status so often associated with it. In doing so, he engaged his followers, including us today, with his humble yet powerful ways.
As parents, teachers and leaders of our communities and nations, surely we can look no further than Jesus as a model for humble yet effective leadership. For peace in our own lives and in the world, we can look to him not only for consolation as we witness events that disturb us but also as a model for our own words, actions and decisions.
Loving God, we pray:
For all who have been given authority to protect and guide, may they be granted wisdom, discernment, strength and resolve. Keep them humble as they strive for the good of all those they serve. We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION 2024
If your child has been baptised in the Catholic Faith, you have already begun preparations for their reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. From the moment of their birth, you have shared your Faith with your children in your love, words, actions and prayers. This is an essential component in their faith formation.
Receiving the Sacraments is a very blessed time in our journey of faith, and it is the means by which baptised children can complete their journey into full membership of the Catholic Church. They are community events, which remind us of the role of the parish community in the development of our life of faith, hope, and love.
Students in Year 6, who have received the Sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist are eligible to enrol in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

HEARTS ON FIRE, FEET ON THE MOVE
What a successful day we had for Mission Month. Everyone braved the miserable weather and ‘had a shot at goal’ wearing their favourite team jersey.
I am proud to announce that for a one day effort our school community raised $265.10
The winning class was Year 3 and they got to enjoy a game of soccer on the oval, during class time!
LOCAL SUPPORT - VINNIES VAN
Another successful drive for our community. Kelly was filled with joy and appreciation. Thank you to the St Brigid's families for your generosity.
BRIGID MEDAL
Considered the highest student achievement award at St Brigid's. The Brigid medal is presented to a student for outstanding achievement as a leader of faith, justice, and learning. Students who achieve this award live out our school values of compassion, courage, service and stewardship. They are committed to making our school a better place for all.
The recipient of a 5th St Brigid’s Medal was Zachariah C and the recipient of a 6th St Brigid’s Medal was Rosie S. Congratulations to these students and their families.
RE LITERACY RESULTS
The Religious Literacy Assessment framework of Knowing, Working with, Applying and Valuing the Tradition, informs and shapes assessment in RE across K-6 with a focused system collection of data from Year 4 students. The Religious Literacy Assessment Program for Year 4 was successfully completed by 22 of our Year 4 students.
The results showed that the Year 4 cohort achieved better than the Diocesan average in all cognitive processes of applying, working with and knowledge in the strands of church, liturgical year, self, others and creation. The overall Diocesan average was 67.4% and the St Brigid's school average was 78.3%.
2023 MATHS OLYMPIAD
During the year selected students from Years 4,5 and 6 have had the opportunity to compete in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad 2023. This is an annual contest in which schools from all over Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries take part. The Olympiads consist of four separate contests held approximately six weeks apart between May and September. In between the contests students have been enjoying developing important mathematical problem solving skills and improving and building upon the skill of reasoning.
I thank Mrs Mewett for working with the students and to each of the following Mathematicians for their participation and the enthusiasm they brought to each session.
Congratulations to the following students:

STUDENT RECOUNT OF GRANDPARENTS' DAY
On 26 October 2023 we celebrated Grandparents' Day at St Brigid’s. This is an annual acknowledgement of those special family members in our lives.
Firstly, we celebrated Mass together in our parish Church. I was an altar server for the Mass and after communion time, the altar servers received their new albs from the Lumen Christi Parish. This was a very special moment for me, Matthew, Simon, Millie and Hugh.
This was followed by a delicious morning tea and then the grandparents had a chance to visit our classrooms. The classroom visits were amazing as we got to show our grandparents our learning and what we are enjoying in class.
My Spanish grandparents were able to attend and they loved what I was doing in the classroom. They have always been so loving, caring and supportive of me and I am so grateful to have them as they have taught me so many life lessons and how to be a respectful person. My grandparents always inspire hard work, experience and toil. They also inspire courage and determination. My grandparents are very special to me and they always offer love and kindness and are always there to guide me. They make me feel confident and their arms are always open no matter what I do. Most of all they share the stories of their lives with their grandchildren.
