Dear families and friends of St Brigid's,
When we attend Mass this Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Lent, we will again hear the familiar story of The Prodigal Son from Luke’s gospel.
In this well-loved parable, the younger son has left his loving home, squandered the inheritance his father granted him, and found himself living alone in squalor and poverty. He decides, with hope in his heart, to return to his father to beg forgiveness and perhaps to be accepted back as a servant. However, the father welcomes him with open arms, showing unconditional love and forgiveness. This highlights a powerful message of hope - no matter how far we might stray, God’s mercy is always available for those who return to Him with sincere repentance.
In this Jubilee year, the Church reminds us again that we, like the Prodigal Son, are invited to experience a year of hope and mercy. As the father in the parable demonstrates, we believe that God’s arms also are always open for those who seek reconciliation; that no matter the distance between us and God, his forgiveness is greater, and we can always return home.
In our current world of war, with its episodes of retribution and violence, we can also look to the parable of the Prodigal Son for a strong and loving Lenten message. When the son returns, broken and repentant, the father does not respond with angry words, violence, or harsh punishment. Instead, he shows compassion, forgiveness, and unconditional love. The father embraces the son, celebrates his return with a feast, and expresses with gentle words the joy that his lost son has come back.
We are provided with a clear message for ourselves and for those in our world who have strayed from the essential message of Jesus - he provided a model of non-violence in our relationships, where forgiveness and compassion replace cycles of anger, punishment, and retribution.
The Lenten message this week is clear and vital, with positive repercussions for all those with whom we have relationships and for our part in the wider world as disciples of Jesus.
“Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead,
and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.”
NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
ST BRIGID’S SHOWCASES SUSTAINABILITY AND LEADERSHIP
Last Thursday, St Brigid’s had the honour of hosting the WEN Day for 120 students and 30 teachers from across the Diocese, a truly remarkable event that highlighted the ways we have put the principles of Laudato Si’ and our Sustainability Action Plan into motion. The day was a testament to the commitment of our school community to living out the call to care for our common home.
Our Year 6 students took centre stage, delivering an inspiring presentation to the 120 students about the sustainability practices and environmental projects that have become an integral part of life at St Brigid’s. Their leadership was outstanding, demonstrating not only their deep understanding of sustainability but also their passion for sharing these practices with others.
Among the impressive initiatives showcased were:
-
Solar Panels and our commitment to going off the grid, reducing our carbon footprint.
-
The Native Bee Garden, a vital project that supports local biodiversity and the health of our environment.
-
Our innovative Subpod Composting System, which allows us to recycle organic waste right here on our school grounds.
-
The Vegetable Garden, where students learn about sustainable food practices and the importance of growing our own produce.
-
The Water Tank and Wicking Bed Watering System, designed to conserve water while maintaining the beauty of our gardens.
-
Our Source System Bins and Return and Earn Scheme, promoting recycling and encouraging students to be mindful of waste.
These projects are not just practical initiatives, they are part of a broader commitment to environmental stewardship that is rooted in our Benedictine charism. St Brigid’s embedded practices and integrating sustainability into every aspect of school life has been outstanding.
This event also gave us an opportunity to reflect on how these efforts align with our core values of stewardship and care for creation. As we continue to bring our Benedictine mission to life, we are proud to show how our school community is actively contributing to a more sustainable future for all.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the countless dads (and a few mums) who have generously volunteered their time over the years to maintain all our grass and hedges. This invaluable work has saved the school tens of thousands of dollars, which has been reinvested directly into resources that benefit our students' learning and development. The beautifully maintained grounds have not only created a welcoming environment but also enhanced the overall experience for our students, supporting their engagement, wellbeing, and connection to nature.
As legislation around the safety of operating machinery in schools has evolved, and to ensure we continue to meet safety standards, we have had to employ a professional lawn-mowing service to take on this important task. However, I am deeply grateful to all the past and present wonderful groups of parent and grandparent volunteers who have given so much to help keep our school beautiful. You have truly made a lasting impact on our school community.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ILLAWARRA HAWKS!
Well done, Hawks – you’ve brought energy, talent, and pure entertainment to the court, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

NESA SHORT NOTICE INSPECTION
Today, St Brigid’s hosted a NESA Short Notice Inspection, conducted by Natalie Fry and Paul Hewitt. The inspection focused on ensuring the school meets the registration and accreditation requirements set by the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA). Key areas of review included curriculum alignment, student welfare, enrolment and attendance, policies, and overall compliance with educational and legal standards.
I’m pleased to report that the inspection was a resounding success. We received very positive feedback and passed with flying colours!
A heartfelt thank you to the Stage 2 and 3 teachers, as well as the Leadership Team, for your support in preparing for this important process. Your commitment ensures that our students continue to receive a safe, supportive, and high-quality education.

MESSAGE FROM FR BERNARD- ACT OF HOPE PRAYER CARD
Today, your child is bringing home a special gift from the parish in this Year of Jubilee – the Act of Hope prayer. This prayer is a beautiful reminder of our faith and trust in God’s love and mercy.
We encourage you to take a moment as a family to pray together, reflecting on the hope that strengthens us in our daily lives. May this gift be a source of blessing and inspiration in your home.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION 2025
If your child has been baptised in the Catholic Faith, you have already begun preparations for their reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. From the moment of their birth, you have shared your Faith with your children in your love, words, actions and prayers. This is an essential component in their faith formation.
Receiving the Sacraments is a very blessed time in our journey of faith, and it is the means by which baptised children can complete their journey into full membership of the Catholic Church. They are community events, which remind us of the role of the parish community in the development of our life of faith, hope, and love.
Students in Year 6, who have received the Sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist are eligible to enrol in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

LENT
Lent is a significant period in the Christian calendar, marking the 40 days leading to Easter. It is a time to pause, consider our actions, and focus on growth and renewal.
Throughout Lent, we encourage our school community to embrace the values of compassion, forgiveness, and generosity. Simple acts of kindness, such as helping a friend, sharing with others, or offering words of encouragement, can have a profound impact. This season also offers a chance to reflect on gratitude and the importance of caring for those around us.
In the coming weeks, students will participate in various activities to deepen their understanding of Lent. These values align closely with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which call us to uphold the dignity of every person, care for the vulnerable, and work for the common good. Simple acts of kindness, such as helping a friend, sharing with others, or offering words of encouragement, can have a profound impact. This season also offers a chance to reflect on gratitude and the importance of caring for those around us.
PROJECT COMPASSION
One key initiative is our 2025 Project Compassion fundraiser, supporting communities in Samoa and Vietnam. This important program, helps provide essential resources. Through their participation in fundraising and events these past weeks and as part of our PROJECT COMPASSION Fundraising Day, our students are encouraged to reflect on global solidarity and how small actions can create positive change.
We invite families to continue to make contributions until the end of this term, as each House team hopes to raise enough money for the purchase of a toilet for families in Samoa.
Our House Leaders are currently keen to ensure that their HOUSE is the most successful fundraisers this term! Please give what you can.

May this Lenten season be a time of spiritual growth and a reminder of the power of kindness and reflection. Together, let us journey with hope and renewal toward Easter.

WEEKDAY PARISH MASSES
St Brigid’s is part of the wider Catholic community. In our context, Religious Education is shared by home, parish and school, with each having its own distinct contribution. The relationship between the Religious Education program and the religious life of our school within the Lumen Christi Parish community is deeply interconnected.
While our students actively participate in prayer – be it silent, meditative or traditional within the school day, we also come together for school liturgies and whole school Masses to celebrate significant events in the school and Church's calendar. As we have our church onsite, classes attend parish Masses on Thursday mornings.
We would like to extend an invitation to all families to attend our Parish Masses alongside our students and parishioners. We know how much this means to your children and our parish community.
In Sacrosantum Concilium, Pope Francis declared active participation in Mass is “the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit.”
In order for you to plan your involvement in our school/parish Masses, please see the attached 2025 Parish Mass Calendar for families. Each grade will attend Parish Mass each term and we request that parents use the calendar provided to schedule attendance for the Whole School Masses as well as one of the Thursday parish masses each term. Please note that our Whole School Masses are led by students from Year 2 -Year 6.
From 2025, we would also like to extend an invitation for parents to become involved in the parish Mass on the dates shown (and with their child’s class) : please fill in the attached form if you would be interested.
After each Mass, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a ‘cuppa’ with our parish community followed by a visit to your child’s class.

PROJECT COMPASSION - MISSION EFFORT
We had a fantastic day celebrating our Project Compassion Mission Effort Day! A huge thank you to the parents of Samaritan House for the scrumptious cupcakes, your generosity and support made the day even more special.
It was truly inspiring to see our school community working together, living out the values of Catholic Social Teaching and embracing the preferential option for the poor. A special shoutout to the Samaritan House leaders, and the Samaritan staff team for their dedication in organising this meaningful event.
Together, we are making real difference this Lent.

RICE DAY- Year 6 Takes on the Challenge to Unite Against Poverty
Year 6 embraced the challenge of fasting for six hours, eating only a bowl of steamed rice, as part of our commitment to UNITE AGAINST POVERTY. In the weeks leading up to the event, we gathered sponsors, ensuring they understood that our fast was not just a personal test but a way to support those in need.
On Tuesday morning, we woke with a sense of purpose-living out the Gospel values of service, stewardship, compassion, and courage. After a healthy breakfast, we made our way to school, ready for the challenge ahead.
During Crunch and Sip, Mrs Arthur-Worsop offered us a butterscotch lolly, and we were reminded to sip water throughout the morning. To avoid the temptation of watching others eat, our class decided to stay in the classroom during meal breaks.
The rice for our fast was generously donated by Kate Sciannimanica (Tom’s mum), while Saira Mussared (Ryder’s mum) and Carol Hardy (Julia’s mum) kindly came in to steam it for us. By 12:30, we were eagerly anticipating our meal. Mrs Arthur-Worsop’s lollies did little to ease our growing hunger. What a powerful realisation it was! We had enjoyed breakfast, and we knew we would have afternoon tea and dinner once home. But for many children around the world, this single bowl of rice is their only meal of the day.
And how did the rice taste? Delicious-yes, DELICIOUS!
This year, the money raised through Rice Day, the Samaritan House Fundraiser, and the Project Compassion boxes will help provide toilets for communities in Samoa, improving hygiene and quality of life in this disadvantaged island nation.

OUR TEACHERS: STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE
“If we create a culture where every teacher believes they need to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”
The above quote is from Emeritus Professor, Dylan Wiliam. Professor Wiliam is a highly respected teacher and educational researcher and author who has supported schooling systems across the world improve learning outcomes for students. Our teachers at St Brigid’s are highly trained professionals who are constantly looking to provide the best learning opportunities for the students in their care - your children.
It is with great pride that I would like to inform you of one of the professional learning initiatives taking place with our teachers this year, namely Teaching Sprints. In a nutshell Teaching Sprints involves a process of teachers working alongside other teachers to improve an area of practice. Again, it is not because they are lacking in this aspect, but that they want to get even better. Teachers engage with current evidence informed educational research and collaborative conversations around targeted areas of practice that have been chosen as a focus by the teachers themselves. Our initial Teaching Sprint focuses have been based around the use use of specific High Impact Teaching Strategies, as outlined below:
Setting goals: this strategy has many aspects to it including intentionality and clarity with the use learning intentions and success criteria for lesson sequences. It also explores the importance of student ownership of their learning, through setting and monitoring achievement of personal learning goals.
Worked examples: this strategy explores the crucial role of modelling throughout lessons. The strategy delves deeply into the different types of modelling that need to be utilised within lessons, the purposes behind these variations and the timing of effective modelling in a classroom.
Metacognitive strategies: this strategy is essentially about supporting students ‘think about their thinking’. The strategy is allied to other High Impact Teaching strategies, such as Setting Goals. Students who develop strong metacognitive thinking tend to be more resilient and focussed with their learning and are able to monitor their own growth towards achievement of learning goals. Strong metacognitive thinking also supports problem solving efforts as students self evaluate the effectiveness of strategies they are applying to solve problems.
Teachers will be engaging with Teaching Sprints with varying focuses throughout the year.

SPORTING PATHWAYS
We are pleased to announce that David represented our school at the MacKillop AFL trials, held in Wagga on March 24th and 25th March. Congratulations on your wins against Albury and Parramatta and we wish you good luck in your future games. We are proud to have him represent our school.
"On Monday and Tuesday, I had the incredible opportunity to represent the Wollongong and Canberra-Goulbourn diocese at the AFL MacKillop Trials in Wagga Wagga. The day was packed with action as we battled it out in four intense games against teams from Albury, Sydney, Parramatta and Wagga. We ended up clinching victories in 2 of those match ups - one against Albury and another against Parramatta.
Despite the heat, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 35 degrees, we pushed through the day with determination and grit. When the trials wrapped up, they announced the MacKillop team. While I didn't make the cut, I found some comfort in knowing that only one player from our team was selected.
Overall it was an unforgettable experience - challenging, competitive and full of excitement. Playing AFL alongside such talented athletes made the day all the more memorable and I am already looking forward to the next opportunity!"
