But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise through faith in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3: 14-15)
In NSW, Grandparents Day will be celebrated this Sunday, October 27, 2019. This day is set aside each year to celebrate the contributions grandparents make to their families and communities, recognising the diversity of grandparent relationships across age groups, cultural backgrounds, and geographical locations. Those who take on the role of a grandparent in their family or community are celebrated for their contributions.
The treasured role of grandparents in families and older people in the community is highlighted in this way by the Department of Communities and Justice. On Grandparents Day, this department aims to support children and young people, so they have the best possible start to life and are protected from abuse and neglect; communities to become more resilient and inclusive; and seniors, so they experience the benefits of living longer.
We are also reminded by the Church, in the words of Pope Francis, to cherish our grandparents: “How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society! How important it is to have intergenerational exchanges and dialogues, especially within the context of the family.”
At St Brigid’s we celebrate the gift of our grandparents on Monday, October 28, 2019 as we celebrate G'day
A grandparents prayer this week, might be:
Loving God,
Our grandchildren are a blessing and joy. We love them with such passion, and know each moment spent with them is of great value.
Help us to only add joy to their lives, to follow the lead of their parents, but also to sow unique and special seeds of love and compassion into their hearts.
Help us to tune in to their worries and challenges. Bless our relationship with them, that we might display and lead them into the grace and freedom of your love for them.
Amen.
Yours in Faith, Justice and Learning

OCTOBER - MONTH OF THE ROSARY
This month, as Catholics, we have a special prayer focus in the Rosary. The Rosary is a special communal mantra prayer that includes the prayers that we all know, the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. It is a prayer that honours Mary, while focusing on the events in the life of Jesus Christ. It is a powerful prayer, that when shared, can transform a family’s spiritual life.
ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS DAY
We celebrate two important feasts in our Catholic Church in November, All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
All Saints Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It’s important for us to remember that those we call ‘saints’ were ordinary people like us! But although they were like us, many of these people achieved extraordinary things. How did they do it? It was because of their faith! There is a saying that faith can move mountains. A saint is someone who never gave up believing! These men and women of faith set a great example for us today.
In Christianity, All Souls Day commemorates All Souls, the Holy Souls, or the Faithful Departed. On this Feast of All Souls, we remember those who have gone before us in faith. Our loved ones are always present with us in our hearts and in our memories. In our Catholic tradition, we call them the Communion of Saints.
