The Road to Emmaus
(Luke 34: 13-35)
At Sunday Mass recently, we listened again to one of the most loved and important Easter stories of the Gospels. The story of the disciples’ encounter with the Risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus prompts all of us to reflect on our own journey to faith. In their loneliness after the death of Jesus, the disciples were struggling with all that had happened, and even with all that Jesus had spoken and taught them while he was with them. On the road to Emmaus, they do not at first recognise Jesus who joins them and explains to them that the Messiah had to suffer and die. Gradually, as they listen, the disciples’ eyes are opened - their loneliness gives way to enlightenment and hope, and they recognise Jesus in the ‘breaking of the bread’.
Just as the disciples realised, we, too, are sustained by our faith in Jesus, the faith we pray might ‘burn in our hearts’ also. Most importantly, we experience the nourishment of our faith through Jesus, the living bread, each time we celebrate the Eucharist together. We accept the Risen Jesus as our companion on the journey - the journey that can be lonely and troubled without the strength of our faith.
As our students celebrate the Eucharist together, and as some prepare to receive the Sacrament for the first time later in the year, we ask that Jesus might speak to their hearts as they approach the altar and ‘break bread’ together; that each one of them might come to know that Jesus, though he has vanished from our sight, stays with us in the Eucharist, as at Emmaus; and that they can come to know and rely on him as their companion on the journey of life.
May the Holy Spirit help us to open our hearts to be aware of Jesus’ presence with us; help us to make our way through the joys, sorrows and dilemmas of our lives; and bring us together one day to everlasting life. Amen.
The Bishop of Wollongong, Most Rev. Brian Mascord DD, has published a new document on the nature and purpose of Catholic schools in our diocese. Titled Bearers of Christ’s Love — Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wollongong, this document is the first of its type in our diocese since the 1970s.
In it, Bishop Brian explores the purpose of Catholic schools as an expression of the Church experience, as well as the vital connection between schools, parents/carers, parishes, and the diocese itself.
Throughout the document, Bishop Brian reiterates:
- The significant role Catholic schools play in the evangelising mission of the Church and the nurturing of students’ faith.
- The commitment of Catholic educators to complement and support the educational rights and duties of parents as their child’s first educator.
- The essential requirement for Catholic schools to be places of educational excellence, where learning, wellbeing and actions of outreach and service are integrated in a holistic educational vision and practice.
- That Catholic schools are places where those seeking a Catholic education are welcome, reflecting the diverse mix of cultures, nationalities and religious traditions that currently make up our school communities.
I encourage you to take the time to watch the short video from Bishop Brian and read this important document on the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong website.

National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long-term well-being of our children. Now in its 24th year, the annual event encourages parents and teachers to teach road safety skills and support the importance of regular walking, not just on 19 May, but every day.
On this day we will not be running the car drop off or pick up zone to encourage all our families to walk to and from school.
PRINCIPAL RENEWAL LEAVE FROM 1 JUNE – 21 JULY
The purpose of professional renewal is to create an opportunity for Principals to take time for personal and professional reflection and to action professional opportunities to develop knowledge and effectiveness as leaders, and/or strengthen their own spirituality in order to authentically lead Catholic School communities.
My renewal leave consists of three and a half weeks living and breaking open 2 elements of the St Brigid’s school mission statement: Inspired by our Catholic Values and the Benedictine tradition, we are committed to developing leaders of faith, justice and learning through…
Seeking God within a community of prayer, service and hospitality faithful to the mission of Jesus. (faith)
Fostering a love of learning and the seeking of wisdom through a contemporary education that encourages all to utilise the ‘good gifts’ given to them and equips them to take their place in the world. (learning)
I will engage in 3 faith and learning experiences during this period of renewal.
EXPERIENCE A |
The Rule of Benedict calls for devoting a generous portion of every day to reading. This is the meditative, contemplative prayer that the Rule calls Lectio Divina, a particular blend of reading and reflection that takes its time and focuses first on Sacred Scripture. |
Visits to English Benedictine communities throughout the UK, joining the community for daily prayer and reflection. |
EXPERIENCE B
|
St Augustine was an Italian Benedictine Monk living in Rome who was sent by Pope Gregory the Great, to bring the English people to conversion. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury and became known as the ‘Apostle of the English’. |
A St Augustine Camino to the birthplace of Christianity. A walking pilgrimage from Rochester Cathedral to the Shrine of St Augustine in Ramsgate. |
EXPERIENCE C
|
“Bringing learning to life and life to learning”. |
Visiting Catholic schools of excellence in England and Scotland. |
Following my Principal Renewal Leave, I will take some Long Service Leave to visit my dad, who lives in Croatia.
