The Olympic Spirit: “Not the Triumph but the Struggle”
As the world once again revels in the excitement and celebrations of the Olympics, we find ourselves captivated by this grand assembly of athletes, spectators, and supporters. Every four years, the Olympic Games seize the attention and imagination of countless individuals across the globe.
Here at St. Brigid’s, we are embracing the spirit of the 2024 Olympics in Paris by organising our own “mini games.” In doing so, we strive to honour Pierre de Coubertin’s vision of the Olympics as a peaceful gathering that celebrates excellence, supreme effort, and tolerance, uniting people from diverse nations. The Olympic creed reminds us: "The most important thing is not to win but to take part; just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle."
Imagine a world where peace and understanding prevail, where everyone is committed to doing their best. These ideals seem increasingly elusive as global conflicts over power and wealth dominate the actions of leaders and their followers.
As Christians, we might pray that the spirit of friendship, love, and goodwill displayed during the Olympics might extend to broader issues of world politics and international relations. If each of us made a personal “supreme effort” to embody the values demonstrated by Jesus - striving against greed, selfishness, and intolerance - we could foster a spirit of peace and understanding in our world. As Jesus taught us:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”
(Matthew 22:38-39)
May these principles guide us as we seek to make a meaningful impact in our own lives and beyond.
Yours in Faith, Justice and Learning
We are excited to host to our Mini Olympics Day on Monday 5 August 2024 from 11:20am to 2:40pm. This fun-filled event will be held at Wiseman Park, and we would love for you to come and cheer on our St Brigid's athletes.
Throughout the Paris Olympics, each class is following a country's progress and is invited to wear that country's colours on the day or their school sports uniform. Students are asked to wear sunscreen, bring a hat and a water bottle. Here are the class countries:
- Kindergarten: China
- Year 1: France
- Year 2: USA
- Year 3: Japan
- Year 4: Great Britain
- Year 5: Australia
- Year 6: Italy
A special meal deal, including a sausage sizzle, lamington, drink, and ice-block will be available from the canteen menu on this day (see flyer attached).
We look forward to seeing all the students participate in this exciting event! Parents are very welcome to attend.
GRANDPARENTS DAY AT ST BRIGID'S
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the grandparents who joined us for our Grandparents Day celebration. Your presence made the day incredibly special for our students and staff.
Your warmth, wisdom, and love filled the Church and classrooms and created memories that will be cherished for years to come. We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful grandparents in our community.

A huge thank you to Mrs Checkley and the Year 5 students for preparing and leading such a a beautiful Mass for G’Day. A big thank you to Mrs Mitrevksi and her band of helpers for coordinating the scrumptious morning tea.
ST BRIGID MEDAL
It was my great honour to present a St. Brigid Medal at the G'day Mass on 25 July 2024 to Zara H who has not only excelled academically but has also demonstrated remarkable character and commitment to her school.
St. Brigid, known for her generosity, wisdom, and unwavering faith, is a fitting namesake for this special award. She dedicated her life to serving others, providing a beacon of hope and kindness to those around her. Zara has mirrored these virtues through her actions and achievements.
Please join me in congratulating Zara on this wonderful achievement.
SACRAMENT OF FIRST EUCHARIST 2024
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” - John 6:51
Over the coming weeks, 24 of our students in Years 3 and Year 5 will continue their preparation for their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. At St Brigid’s, we are blessed that a large proportion of our families seek to take this important step towards these milestones in their child’s life.
As Catholics, we understand that when we bring our child for the sacrament of Baptism, we take responsibility to bring our children up in the life of faith. Now is the time to prepare our children for the eternal nourishment for their faith journey. Of all the gifts that we share with our children, faith is the most precious.
We look forward with joy to our 24 communicants continuing their faith journey through the introduction of the sacrament of Reconciliation and their preparation for their First Holy Communion.
Please pray for our students, their families and teachers during this time of preparation.
CLASS MASS TIMETABLE FOR TERM 3
Each term, our students have the opportunity to attend Mass with our St. Brigid's parishioners. This cherished tradition is a central aspect of our students’ faith formation, serving as the greatest act of worship and a sacred celebration of community.
We warmly invite parents, carers, grandparents, and relatives to join us for Mass, especially when their child(ren) are involved. After each Mass, we serve tea, coffee and biscuits, offering a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and members of our parish community. Additionally, you are welcome to visit the classroom for a 10-15 minute learning walk following Mass. Please see the schedule for Term 3:

UPCOMING FEAST DAYS
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop - Thursday 8 August 2024
The Feast Day of Mary MacKillop is celebrated every August 8th in honor of the revered Saint Mary of the Cross, MacKillop, who is the Patron Saint of Australia and a role model to us all. This day commemorates her passing on August 8, 1909.
Mary urged all who worked with her to "never see a need without doing something about it," and there is no doubt that this mission has been fulfilled. Her work and life continue to inspire who we are and what we do at St. Brigid’s.
We will celebrate this day by recognizing Saint Mary of the Cross, MacKillop’s immense contribution to helping those in need with a liturgy and afternoon activities.
Feast of the Assumption of Mary WHOLE SCHOOL MASS- Thursday 15 August
The commemoration of the death of the Blessed Virgin Mary is known as the Assumption because of the tradition that Mary’s body did not decay but that she was raised up, body and soul, into heaven.
With the Feast of the Assumption shortly approaching, it would be an opportune time to speak with your child/children about Mary, her special qualities, and how we can look to her for guidance on our faith journey.
Please join us for Mass at 9:30am in the St Brigid's Parish Church.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL- THANK YOU
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire school community for their incredible support of the 2024 St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Your generous contributions have made a significant impact, providing essential resources to those in need during the cold winter months. It is through your kindness and commitment that we can continue to support vulnerable individuals and families. Thank you for embodying the spirit of compassion and community service.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE
Catholic School Parents Australia's Free Family Engagement Resources
Catholic School Parents Australia has developed free resources to strengthen the home-school partnership. The new video workshops help guide primary and secondary parents, principals, and school staff to take a holistic approach to their children’s well-being and educational experience.
The resources also include guides for local facilitators to run through the video workshops in collaborative sessions with principals, staff and families. Insights from experts like Andrew Fuller, John Hattie and Donna Cross inform the workshop’s research-backed strategies.
The resources can be found on the Gearing Up for Parent Engagement website.
Premier's Reading Challenge
The challenge aims to encourage a love of learning for leisure and pleasure in student's. It is not a competition - however, there are rewards of certificates and medals for participants - but a challenge to each student to read, read more and to read more widely.
Between Monday 26 February and Friday 23 August 2024 students in Year 3-6 are encouraged to read and record what they have read at the link below. Student's in K-2 will participate and have their entries uploaded in class. Countless research links the time spent reading quality literature to improved results in school - this is a way to support improvement in your child's literacy, knowledge and vocabulary skills.
Each child is able to borrow books from the school library, which count towards the Challenge, when they bring their library bag to school every Friday.
Teachers will be able to provide log in details in Years 3-6 next week.
