Dear families and friends of St Brigid's,
Each year, during the Church Season of Lent, we focus on a particular theme for our actions and prayer. Caritas leads us in this through its Project Compassion Appeal, and this year’s theme is Unite Against Poverty this Lent.
As we journey through the coming weeks of Lent, in preparation for the great feast of Easter, we are called to keep in mind the many people, both in our own country and overseas, who suffer from the hardships and tragedies of poverty.
In this Jubilee Year, Caritas invites us to act on the theme of Hope by coming together to Unite Against Poverty. As Catholic communities, parishes, schools, and families, we can participate in Project Compassion to turn our Christian compassion into a powerful force for change. Together, we can have an impact where it’s needed most and shine the loving light of Christ through our actions and prayers.
During Lent, students at St Brigid’s, along with their families, will be encouraged and supported in participating in fundraising activities and prayerful reflection on the true meaning of Christian charity. Together, we can make a difference!
Reflection Questions for the St. Brigid's School Community:
- Compassion: How can we show compassion for those suffering from poverty, both locally and globally, during this Lenten season?
- Courage: In what ways can we find the courage to act, even when the challenges seem overwhelming, to support those in need?
- Service and Stewardship: How can we embody the values of service and stewardship by using our time, talents, and resources to make a difference through our fundraising efforts and prayers?
Together, let’s journey through Lent with hearts full of compassion, courage, service, and stewardship, keeping those in need in our prayers and actions. By living out our school values, we can truly shine the loving light of Christ in the world.
NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
A CALL TO LENTEN ACTION
ARRIVE TO THRIVE - ATTENDANCE
Regular Attendance: 90% – 100% Targeted Intervention: 71% – 89% Intensive Intervention: 70% and below |
In this and future newsletters, we will focus on sections of the new Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) Attendance Policy and Procedures to help foster a deeper understanding of the important role parents play in ensuring their child's regular school attendance. Our goal is to support you in your partnership with the school, as we work together to promote consistent attendance, which is key to your child’s learning and development.
Regular attendance at school is vital to a child’s educational journey. It is integral not only to academic achievement but also to students’ overall wellbeing and their future opportunities. Each day a student attends school, they are given the opportunity to feel a sense of belonging, grow in their faith, and reach their full learning potential.
According to the Education Act 1990 (NSW), parents have a legal responsibility to ensure that their child attends school regularly. In partnership with families, CEDoW schools are committed to encouraging and supporting students' consistent attendance.
We look forward to partnering with you in the coming weeks and months to highlight the importance of regular attendance and to explore the shared responsibilities we all have in supporting your child’s success in learning.
This week we look at Parent Responsibility taken from the policy and the procedures for Travel.
Parents are responsible for:
- communicating to the school any concerns they have identified in relation to their child’s pattern of attendance;
- working in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support their child’s regular attendance at school;
- promptly, and within seven calendar days, explaining to the school any absence of their child from school. For the avoidance of doubt, the explanation must be provided to the school within seven calendar days of the first day of any period of absence;
- providing to the school reasonable advance notice of any extended absence for their child;
- providing to the school reasonable advance notice when seeking an exemption from enrolment or exemption from attendance for their child;
- promptly providing to the school any documentation required by the school in relation to attendance or enrolment.
Attendance - Travel
We encourage all families to plan travel outside of the four school terms, unless an exceptional circumstance, as outlined below, applies. This ensures alignment with the principles of the new CEDoW Attendance Policy. We greatly appreciate your support as we work together to prioritise your child’s educational success.
If the extended absence is for the purpose of travel, parents must submit the Notification of Extended Absence form along with relevant travel documentation. This documentation should include:
- The intended dates of travel
- The locations of travel
- The purpose of the travel
- The reasons for undertaking the travel outside the school holiday period
After reviewing the submitted form, the school will issue an Acknowledgement of Extended Absence to the parent. This acknowledgment will be provided regardless of whether the Principal accepts or does not accept the explanation for the absence. It may also outline specific matters related to the student’s learning and wellbeing that have been agreed upon with the parent.

STUDENT- LED OPEN HOUSES AND OPEN CLASSROOMS
Student-led open houses are an essential part of fostering genuine parent engagement and creating a collaborative learning environment. These events provide a unique opportunity for parents to witness firsthand the growth and development of their children.
We value the feedback we have received from some families regarding the timing of these open houses and are committed to ensuring that they are as accessible and beneficial as possible. We are finalising a draft of proposed dates and times for 2025 and will publish them in the next newsletter.
We look forward to authentically welcoming you into the learning spaces and continuing to work together as true partners in your child’s education. Your involvement and feedback are invaluable to us as we strive to create meaningful connections.
"Partnership in Catholic education is a shared journey of faith, where parents, teachers, and students come together to nurture the whole child: mind, body, and spirit—creating a foundation for lifelong learning and Christian living."
Step into Learning Before the Race Begins
Parents will have the opportunity to visit their child's classroom for a general guided learning walk and talk before the Cross Country Carnival on Thursday 3 April 2025. CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME - CLEAN UP SCHOOLS' DAY
A big thank you to all the students and staff who participated with such enthusiasm in our Annual Clean Up Schools Day! Your hard work and dedication to caring for our school grounds is inspiring.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION 2025
If your child has been baptised in the Catholic Faith, you have already begun preparations for their reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. From the moment of their birth, you have shared your Faith with your children in your love, words, actions and prayers. This is an essential component in their faith formation.
Receiving the Sacraments is a very blessed time in our journey of faith, and it is the means by which baptised children can complete their journey into full membership of the Catholic Church. They are community events, which remind us of the role of the parish community in the development of our life of faith, hope, and love.
Students in Year 6, who have received the Sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist are eligible to enrol in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS
Three days ago, Ash Wednesday marked the first day of the season of Lent. As we looked around the church, we saw the Lenten colour purple, with all the green of ordinary time now gone.
Lent is a very special time in our lives when we are encouraged to pray, give up things we enjoy and make a difference in the lives of others by doing kind things for others as we prepare to celebrate the Easter. Over the next forty days of Lent, we are asked to follow Jesus on his final journey to Calvary where he died on the cross for us all.
Despite all the suffering he endured, Jesus showed mercy and forgiveness to those who sentenced him to his death. During Lent we are encouraged to show the love and forgiveness to others as Jesus did to those who ordered and carried out his crucifixion. During Lent, let's follow the example Jesus showed us during the events of Holy Week to help us make good choices and help others whenever we can.
St Matthew was our Gospel reading on Ash Wednesday. St Matthew is encouraging us during this period of Lent to reach out to others in need, make a difference in their lives without expecting anything in return.
The ashes placed on your foreheads are a reminder to us all of the Lenten promises we will make in our lives and encourage us to give of ourselves to others and their needs over the next few weeks.
This week, we have also launched our Project Compassion fundraiser. This reminds us of those who don’t have access to basic needs such as water , shelter , food and medicine – things that we take for granted. Let’s think about what we can do to help and ask ourselves how can we make a difference in their lives?
Please see the Project Compassion flyer for further information.

WEEKDAY PARISH MASSES
St Brigid’s is part of the wider Catholic community. In our context, Religious Education is shared by home, parish and school, with each having its own distinct contribution. The relationship between the Religious Education program and the religious life of our school within the Lumen Christi Parish community is deeply interconnected.
While our students actively participate in prayer – be it silent, meditative or traditional within the school day, we also come together for school liturgies and whole school Masses to celebrate significant events in the school and Church's calendar. As we have our church onsite, classes attend parish Masses on Thursday mornings.
We would like to extend an invitation to all families to attend our Parish Masses alongside our students and parishioners. We know how much this means to your children and our parish community.
In Sacrosantum Concilium, Pope Francis declared active participation in Mass is “the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit.”
In order for you to plan your involvement in our school/parish Masses, please see the attached 2025 Parish Mass Calendar for families. Each grade will attend Parish Mass each term and we request that parents use the calendar provided to schedule attendance for the Whole School Masses as well as one of the Thursday parish masses each term. Please note that our Whole School Masses are led by students from Year 2 -Year 6.
From 2025, we would also like to extend an invitation for parents to become involved in the parish Mass on the dates shown (and with their child’s class) : please fill in the attached form if you would be interested.
After each Mass, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a ‘cuppa’ with our parish community followed by a visit to your child’s class.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all families for their generous support of our Justice Appeal for the Wollongong Vinnies Van. NAPLAN 2025 STARTS THIS WEEK
I would like to remind everyone that the NAPLAN tests will commence this Wednesday. As a school, we are fully committed to supporting our students through this process and encourage all students to approach the tests with confidence and a positive mindset.
NAPLAN plays a key role in tracking the progress of students in literacy and numeracy, providing valuable insights into how well students are mastering essential skills in reading, writing, maths, and language conventions. Although NAPLAN results are not the sole measure of student progress, they help us better understand each student’s learning and the effectiveness of our educational programs.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all our teachers for their thorough preparation in the lead-up to these tests. Their dedication to ensuring that students feel supported and prepared is truly appreciated.
As we move forward with NAPLAN, I encourage families to reassure students that there is no need to worry. Simply remind them to do their best, as our teachers have ensure that they are familiar with the test format and will offer guidance throughout. NAPLAN is just one part of their educational experience, and we are here to support them every step of the way.
I wish all our students the best of luck during this important time.

SWIMMING NEWS
The Swimming Carnival that took place on Thursday 20 February 2025 was a day filled with excitement and team spirit. Some enthusiastic students arrived early at 8:00am to compete for individual medals, while the rest of the students gathered at school and boarded the buses.
Despite the drizzle that greeted us at the start of the day, it didn't dampen our swimmers' spirits, and everyone dove into the events with energy and enthusiasm.
Evans, Samaritan, and MacKillop Houses were all lined up beside the pool, cheering on their teammates and rallying for their houses. After completing the main events, we enjoyed a brief break before diving into the fun 25m Splash events, which allowed eager students to try their hand at a race in a more relaxed, enjoyable setting.
The following day, back at school, we held our ribbon ceremony where Evans House was proudly announced as the 2025 winning house for the swimming carnival.
Congratulations to all the students who won ribbons at our carnival! A special shout-out to our Junior and Senior Age Champions: Ted, Evie, Alice and Kip. Your hard work and dedication truly shone through, and we are incredibly proud of your achievements. Well done!
Our 22 strong St Brigid’s Swimming Squad made an incredible showing at the South Coast Regional Swimming Carnival, braving extreme weather conditions with determination and enthusiasm! Despite the challenging rain and wind, our swimmers gave it their all, demonstrating exceptional skill and sportsmanship. It was an exciting day, full of energy and fierce competition, and we couldn't be prouder of how our squad represented the school:

A huge thank you to Mrs Carey-Barr and Mrs Lavelle for their outstanding coordination of this event and the swimming pathway event. There was a lot of organising involved, and their hard work paid off. I also want to extend a special thank you to the staff who assisted throughout the day, as well as to the parents for their continued support. It was a true team effort, and your collective contributions helped ensure the carnival went as smoothly as possible.
