Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,
On Monday 15 August 2022 we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption - our Catholic belief that Mary was taken, body and soul, to enjoy eternal life. In celebrating this feast, the Church recalls how Mary’s life on earth ended - an apparent perfect ending to a perfectly lived life of grace and so in honouring her passing, we also honour her living.
What do we learn from Mary through the living of her life?
In a real and powerful way, Mary shows all of us what it means to live a life totally alive in Christ with an undivided will to participate in God’s purpose for her and for the world. Mary demonstrates a complete freedom and intention to place herself without reservation at the service of Christ and God’s kingdom. Her freedom to say ‘yes’ and respond to God’s call is unconditional and does not need to see the future outcome before trusting. Mary embraces God’s call and choice of her and needs nothing more to commit.
In the fullness of her faith and womanhood, Mary shows us that faith does not separate us from the world but makes us more open to and connected to it. With her ‘yes’ given in the mess of life’s circumstances, the midst of precariousness and unrecognised relationships or domestic life and poverty, she stands in solidarity with the poor and the victims of oppression, of gossip, of exclusion; with all those who, like her, have had to hold a dead child in their arms or flee their home for protection or asylum for their families.
This woman of Nazareth shines for those who always believe that God is in the mess and even in the darkness of suffering and death.
Mary shows us a glimpse of how the life of grace makes us more human and that in God’s presence we become completely ourselves, fully alive in body and soul. On this feast we celebrate her unique role as a true disciple of Jesus.
In Mary’s assumption, we stand on the promise that we can each make a difference in this world.
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
The annual Year 6 Masses, which are a coming-of-age tradition for students graduating from their primary school education, are an opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist and they also remind students how they can foster their relationships with Jesus through compassionate actions and loving words as they grow.
The NSW Education Act (1990) and Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) require Parents/Carers to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend school on each day that the school is open for instruction. If students are absent from school, Parents/Carers are required to provide the school with an acceptable explanation, within seven days of the absence.
The settings in compass were adjusted to reflect the requirements of the Education Act (1990). After seven days, absences will automatically be recorded as Absent - unexplained / unjustified if the school is not provided with an acceptable explanation from Parents/Carers. Parents wishing to provide the school with an acceptable explanation after the seven-day period, will need to contact the school and the school will adjust the attendance register. Parents will no longer be able to enter the absence through the parental portal in Compass after the seven-day period.
It wonderful to recognise the learning and leadership achievements of stuents in addition to the living of our school values. Please remember if you are motivated to achieve your milestones, keep your awards in a very safe place and then follow the school procedure.

As you are aware, next month, Wollongong will host an international professional cycling race - the 2022 UCI Road World Championships. The race will run from Sunday 18 - Sunday 25 September 2022 and is organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body for cycling, in conjunction with Events NSW and Wollongong City Council and supported by a range of government and local community organisations.
ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF THE RACE ON CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
While the dates and course maps have been known for some time, it has been quite difficult to confirm accurate and detailed information from the event organisers. In recent days, we have had the information needed to assess the impact of the race on our local Catholic schools in relation to safety, access, transport, and the ability to respond to an emergency or critical incident that might occur at a school site during this time.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR OUR SCHOOL
As a result of our assessments, both St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School, Gwynneville and Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School, Fairy Meadow will move to remote learning for the entire final week of this school term (Monday 19 - Friday 23 September 2022). During this time, the two school sites will be non-operational and unavailable for regular access by students, parents/carers and staff. As announced previously, the last day of Term 3, 23 September 2022, is a Staff Development Day for the St Brigid’s staff. Therefore, no remote learning will occur on this day and the last day for the students is Thursday 22 September 2022.
We will welcome students back at school for Term 4, in full summer uniform, on Tuesday 11 October 2022. Much like the COVID-19 remote learning phase, students will continue to learn and be supported by their teachers using online learning platforms such as Google Classrooms and Seesaw. More specific details about the arrangements for remote learning in the final week of the term will be communicated to parents/carers and students in the coming weeks.

Navigating the online experiences of your children requires effort and diligence.
Be prepared for the reality that, despite the best filters and parental controls, at some time your child may stumble across, or be exposured to sexually explicit material, grooming and unwanted approaches from strangers, cyberbullying, internet addiction, privacy issues and sexting, to name a few.

COVID-19 SMART PROCEDURES FOR COMING ONTO SITE
Despite many restrictions being lifted, the St Brigid’s staff have elected to continue to wear face masks to keep healthy and to achieve learning continuity for the students by avoiding sickness and absenteeism. Therefore, I ask that you show your support for the staff by adhering to the 4 COVID-19 smart procedures below when you come onto the school site as a volunteer or visitor.
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS PROCEDURES - GOOGLE FORM
Please continue to fill in the reporting google form if your child has even the mildest of respiratory symptoms; is a close household contact, or has tested Positive for COVID-19.
The information contained in this form gives me very good data about prevailing illness in the school which I can communicate to parents to help us all work together to ensure the health and safety of our community.
This google form can be found on the St Brigid’s website, as a link in the Brigid Bulletin and by clicking the link in the COMPASS news-feed.
Students and staff who have undergone testing and have been directed to self-isolate can return to school when: they have received a negative test result, completed their 7 day isolation period AND are not displaying symptoms of illness.
Your support in ensuring the health and safety of the St Brigid’s Community during this global pandemic has been greatly appreciated.
Please complete it any day or time of the week, including weekends. The information will automatically come to Ms Uroda and Mrs Sammut.

And that's a wrap for SPOTLIGHT on Learning 2022. I hope you enjoyed seeing the wonderful learning experiences your children have been engaged in throughout the course of the year. A big thank you to our Year 6 students and teachers for their leadership, flexibility and Hollywood skills.
ASSESSMENT TASK AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO SEE ON THE COMPASS PORTAL?
Today you will be able to see an assessment task that your child has completed on COMPASS. You will see a learning intention, success criteria and a grade next to each success criteria from the classroom teacher. The learning intention comes from the NSW syllabus and the success criteria outlines how students can be successful with the task. Teachers will assign either Working Towards, Working At or Working Beyond for each success criteria. Your child will show you their completed assessment task on either Seesaw (K-2) or Google Classroom (3-6). This is another way we would like to engage you in what your child has been learning. We encourage you to ask your child to show you the task they completed on Seesaw or on Google Classroom and have a conversation with them about their learning. Please follow the steps in the attached document to see your child's assessment on compass. Please note that if your child has been absent for an extended period of time due to illness or a family holiday, they may not have this assessment visible if it was completed during their absence.

The SRC members from each class will tally up the amount of nude food lunch boxes brought to school on a random day during the week. There will be incentives for the classes who bring the most bring nude food lunches to school and these are:
- Each week the class that has the most nude food will be announced on assembly and will be awarded with the St Brigid's Peace Lily for their classroom for the week.
- During Weeks 3,6,9 the students who bring Nude Food in will receive a raffle ticket to go into the draw to win a special NUDE FOOD lunch-box. What a COOL prize.
- The class that has brought Nude Food to school the most throughout Term 3 will receive a reward of extra play and sampling some fresh produce from our school garden.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS - STUDENT VOICE
Last term we continued our exploration of what a Safe and Respectful School looks like, sounds like and feels like. We consulted our students in the form of a survey to gather their thoughts and opinions on how safe and respected they felt at school. The teachers analysed this data last week and have come up with a plan for this term. All classes have started this term with defining what DISRESPECTFUL WORDS and BEHAVIOURS are and we will further explore the concept of respect as a non-negotiable during our Bullying No Way Day- Respect in Games. An outline of the plan for this term is as follows:
- A student consultation group to develop 'peer-to-peer relationships' expectations that will be explicitly taught to the whole school.
- A weekly focus of RESPECT to be announced by the Year 6 leaders at the assembly and this focus will then be taught through role play during the week and students who display this focus will be affirmed and awarded.
- Whole school exploration of CONSENT and understanding our own body boundary.
