In celebrating Mothers Day this weekend, we acknowledge and pay tribute to all St Brigid’s mothers and mothering. I make that distinction because I know that on occasions and in different circumstances that many other people including aunts, stepparents, grandparents, dads and close family friends fulfil the primary mothering role in families.
We also pray as a Catholic community for mothers everywhere. We think about how children and mothers who have been forcibly separated through government policy, war, or natural disaster are feeling. We think about how women and children affected by domestic violence are feeling. We think about woman who suffer great loss, harassment and abuse are feeling.
But hopefully we do more than think. We pray, we speak out and stand up for mothers everywhere, for peace and equality. In Luke’s Gospel (1:46-55) we read Mary’s song of praise, the Magnificat, and pray that it will be an inspiration to us. Mary imagines a world that reflects the face of God’s love and compassion, where all are fed and every hurt is removed, and where a strong light is thrown on the face of human degradation and suffering. This is a different image of Mary from the often-romanticised view of her as forever patient and suffering.
Mothering is an act of faith. There are no guarantees of the outcome, there can be great pain as well as joy, tears as well as laughter. There’s no room for ego, but there’s always plenty of people ready to judge and label you. I invite all mothers to place justice for self at the core of their thoughts and actions. If mothers are called to show love, compassion, and justice to others, they need to show themselves that same respect.
Let us pray…
Spirit of Life, today we remember the women, named and nameless, who through the ages have used the power and the gifts which you gave them to change the world. We refer to these mothers who went before us to help us discover in ourselves this power, and how to use it in such a way that we help to advance a kingdom of justice and peace.
We remember Sarah, who with Abraham responded to God’s call to leave the land in which she was born and to put her trust in a covenant with God. We pray for her strength in faith.
We remember Esther and Deborah, who saved their people through acts of personal courage. We pray for their strength to be bold, to act in the interest of the greatest good.
We remember Mary Magdalene and the other women who followed Jesus and were not believed when they proclaimed the resurrection. We pray for their strength to believe against the temptation to doubt.
We remember Phoebe, Priscilla and the other feminine leaders of the early Church. We pray for their strength to spread the gospel and inspire communities.
We remember Teresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena, who strongly opposed the corruption of the Church at the time of the Renaissance. We pray for their power with which they try to hand things on to us.
We pray for the women who are victims of violence in their own homes, that power will be given them to overcome their anxiety and look for solutions.
We pray for the women who stand face to face with a life of poverty and undernourishment. That power be given them to hold fast and open possibilities for all women.
We pray for daughters and granddaughters, that power may be given them to seek happiness in their lives.
We have stood silently in the power of many women from the past and present. Now it is time to stand by ourselves. In each of us there is the same life, light and love, and within us lie the seeds of power and glory.
Spirit of life, be with us in our mission as we celebrate this special day. Amen
CONGRATULATIONS DEACON JAMES ARBLASTER
Last Saturday, 30 April 2022, James Arblaster was ordained by Bishop Brian Mascord at St Francis Xavier Cathedral as our new deacon.
Deacon James is a seminarian in the last phase of training for the priesthood. We are very fortunate that he will be ministering among us at Lumen Christi Parish during 2022. James will also be presiding at the Liturgy of the Word celebrations with the students of St Brigid's throughout the year. After being a deacon for a year, Bishop Brian will ordain him a priest.
Deacons can baptise, witness marriages, perform funeral and burial services outside of Mass, distribute Holy Communion and preach the homily. After being a deacon for a year, Bishop Brian will ordain Deacon James as a priest.
We congratulate Deacon James and wish him every blessing for the year ahead as he continues his formation towards priestly ordination.
Dear Families and Friends of Lumen Christi Parish,
At the Angelus Address in St Peter’s Square in Rome, on 14 March 2021, Pope Francis announced that on “Friday, 19 March, Solemnity of Saint Joseph, the Amoris Laetitia Year of the Family will open”. Pope Francis explained that it would be “a special year to grow in family love.” He then called “for a renewed and creative pastoral drive to place the family at the centre of the attention of the Church and of society.” It was his prayer “that every family may feel in its own home the living presence of the Holy Family of Nazareth, that it may fill our small domestic communities with sincere and generous love, a source of joy even in trials and difficulties.” Every family needs to be aware of this living presence of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in their home as a way of remembering their vocation to live for God and for each other in mutual love and service.
In response to this invitation to reflect on the vocation and mission of Christian families, this Sunday (1 May 2022) we will be praying as a parish for all our families. To give a tangible expression to this prayer, an icon of the Holy Family will be placed before the sanctuary in St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Wollongong, and be blessed by Bishop Brian during the 10:30am Sunday Mass. One of our families will then light a candle before the icon to remind us that Christ, the Risen Lord, is the centre and support of the Christian home. This icon will be fixed to one of the walls of the Cathedral as a devotional focus to contemplate the virtues of family life and to find consolation in times of darkness and sorrow.
To foster our reflection on married and family life, Pope Francis has recommended a renewed study of his Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). This Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, published in 2016, reflects on nine key ideas:
- Family life in the light of God’s Word
- The current experiences and challenges of families
- Jesus’ teaching on marital love and marriage as a Sacrament
- The growth of a married couple’s love through the various stages of life
- The welcoming of new life into a marriage and care for children
- Formation for couples before marriage and during their married life
- Developing ways to better educate children
- Pastoral mercy and discernment for people in morally difficult situations
- The spirituality of marriage and family life as love, care, and consolation
As Lumen Christi parish we want to place our families at the centre of our attention. No matter where your family is situated or what struggles presently challenge you, you are loved by God. It may be the case that life in your family has been difficult and painful, or that there has been a breakdown in marital or family relationships. Whatever the circumstances, whoever is possibly at fault, God is with you, helping you to see the way forward according to the truth, mercy, and peace of Christ.
Last week I commenced a nine-week series of reflections on Amoris Laetitia.
The next meeting is on Wednesday 18 May 2022, 7pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in the Monsignor Rigney Meeting Room. To follow the talk, please purchase a copy of Amoris Laetitia from the parish office. Copies can also be purchased before the meeting starts. You are most welcome to attend.
Thank you to all our families for your beautiful witness of faith, prayer, and commitment. You remind us of an essential aspect of our Catholic religion, that God is Love and faithfully cares for us both in good times and when the storms of life are against us.
May God bless you and your children with hope and joy.
Fr Bernard Gordon (26 April 2022)

CROSS COUNTRY 2022
During the last week of Term 1, we were able to hold our Cross Country as a 'selection trial' at the Botanic Gardens. Mrs Carey-Barr, Mrs Mitrevski, myself and Mrs Brodnick accompanied 38 students to the gardens and with the suppport of parent volunteers the students were able to participate in the 2km course. They ran like the wind, cheering each other on and encourgaing their friends to keep going. By the end, all students were hot, sweaty and puffing but very proud of their efforts. Well done to all the students who showed great sportsmanship. The Diocesan Cross Country has been postponed and will hopefully go ahead for the students who received an invitation on May 24, 2022.
Back at school, while we could not enage in any events due to the wet weather, the students enjoyed a House chant competition and some fun warm ups.
Please enjoy seeing snapshots of the Cross Country competitors and the fun back at school.
KINDERGARTEN INVESTIGATE A CRIME SCENE
There has been a crime commited in Kindergaten. Poor Humpty Dumpty who was happily sitting on his wall has had a terrible fall and his shell has smashed into pieces. Kindergaten do not know what happened to Humpty Dumpty but they are conduting a very serious investigation which involves searching for clues, dusting for fingerprints and questioning any witnesses. They were visited be Detective Officer Sammut during the week who appointed more junior detectives to get to the bottom of the crime. Kindergarten will work to solve this mystery and find out once and for all... who caused Humpty to fall?????
WHEN STUDENTS FORGET TO BRING ITEMS TO SCHOOL
From time to time, your child may forget their hat, ipad or other items required at school. If this occurs and you would like to bring the item to school, we have a 'drop box' that is located just outside the office door for you to drop the item into. Just give the office a phone call to say you have dropped the item off and we will ensure your child receives the item. Thank you kindly for your support.
FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR'S DESK
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY - May the Month of Mary
Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. She was a willing servant. She trusted God and she obeyed his call.
Mary was young, poor and female. God looked upon the quality of her trust and obedience. He knew she would willingly serve God in one of the most important callings ever given to a human being. Just like Mary, God looks at our obedience and trust.
Can we willingly accept God's plan?
And so we pray...
Loving God, we thank you for mothers – for all they mean or have meant, for the love they have shown and the care they have given.
We thank you for the qualities of mothers – their patience, their kindness, concern and understanding.
We thank you for the part they play in our lives, and we thank you for this day of saying ‘thank you’, this opportunity to say what we so often mean to say but so rarely do.
For mothers and motherhood, for children and families we bring you this day our grateful praise.
Happy Mothers’ Day.
ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION
The Year 6 students led a prayerful and solemn commemoration for ANZAC Day. A reminder was given that we remember all the service men and women who have died, their families and those who continue to defend our free land. We prayed for the people of Ukraine and for peace, justice and compassion.
Lest we forget.

REFLECTIONS
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Voice Followers You and I are Gentiles – part of the non-Jewish world. We are the sort of Christians we are, because of St Paul. He became the strongest advocate of the grace that the early Christian community should be inclusive of all nations and tribes and ethnic groups on the face of the earth. We have not yet realised this potential. What riches of intellectual traditions, cultural expressions, and organisational structure are we still to receive from the Chinese, the Korean, the Indonesians, the Africans, the Indian Catholics who are part of our ‘Church without Borders’? How do we maintain unity and identity amongst such diversity? By listening for the voice of the Good Shepherd, Our Lord Jesus Christ. But it takes a good teacher to help us to hear The Voice in the clamour of life. Some of those teachers may be found amongst the Bishops who carry a shepherd’s staff. But at least in my experience the best assistant-shepherds have been my parents, and some others. They have helped me hear The Voice assuring me that I will never perish, that I will receive eternal life. That is a Voice worth following! We could pause for a moment to get on the same wavelength as the Good Shepherd so as to echo His Voice in our lives. © Fr Michael Tate; mtate@bigpond.com |

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER City Life for True Lovers ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ You may think that Our Lord’s extravagant extreme of love in voluntarily undergoing death for us, is something no human being could ever measure up to. But actually, something like this happens whenever a mother or father sits by the bedside of a child suffering the terrible pain of a chronic illness or traumatic accident and, perhaps, even facing the prospect of death. Such a parent will invariably say ‘I would rather suffer and die than see my child suffer and die.’ It is the same with a person seeing their much loved life partner in a similar situation. Each of us, usually to a lesser degree and in less fraught circumstances, has the opportunity to absorb, to some extent, the sufferings of others. We are thus given the possibility of fulfilling the command: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ The effect of this sort of loving will be realised at the end of history, not in a garden of Paradise, but as in a wonderful City where all tears will be wiped from our eyes. We could pause for a moment on our way to that future City, resolving to be alert to opportunities to fulfil our Lord’s command: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ © Fr Michael Tate; mtate@bigpond.com |

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER God’s home is where the heart is Some people have the idea that God is awfully remote, dwelling beyond the edge of the cosmos. We make contact by sending a prayer like a long range rocket, hoping it will find its target. This is far distant from Our Lord’s teaching in today’s Gospel. ‘If anyone loves me and keeps my word, my Father and I will make our home with that person.’ It is not in outer space, but in inner space that Divine Love will make a home. What turns a house into a home? It is in sitting around a table sharing a meal. So, Jesus created a sacred meal for us and invites us to share in the Heavenly Bread and Spiritual Drink. When we do so, we find, in the words of St John Paul II, that we ‘digest, as it were, the secret of the Resurrection’. We take into ourselves the Real Presence of the Risen Lord who makes his home with us. Coming to Communion, even after a long time away, satisfies the yearning of the human heart because it is made to be the habitation of Divine Love. We could pause for a moment to reflect on the gracious fact that God chooses to dwell in our hearts. Let us respond wholeheartedly. |
Congratulations to our First Holy Communion recipients.
NEWS FROM THE DA VINCI DECATHALON 2022
On Wednesday the 4th May 2022 the St Brigid’s Year 5 and Year 6 team participated in the Da Vinci Decathlon at the Illawarra Christian College. This day provided an opportunity for students from 19 schools throughout our local region and the Sydney region to come together for a day of stimulating academic activity and challenge.
Student teams were required to solve problems of the highest order in such subjects as Mathematics, English, Science, Art and Poetry, Ideation, Drama, Legacy, Engineering, Code Breaking and Cartography, working against each other, and the clock, to complete each task as successfully as possible. The theme of the day throughout the subjects was Causation.
What a wonderful day of learning it was. I was so proud of the students' efforts on the day, how confidently they worked together, their support of one another and how positively they communicated with each other.
Our Year 6 team received 1st place in Mathematics and 2nd place in Engineering and the Year 5 team received 3rd place in Mathematics. A fantastic achievement for our small school.
A huge thank you and congratulations to the students:
- Year 5: Eve, Hugo, Reed, Emerson, Lachlan, Zachariah, Anthony and Nicolo.
- Year 6: Cameron, Andy, Sophie, Grace, Vincent, Tayah, Raen and Mason.
THE YEAR 5 EXPERIENCE By Reed, Eve and Nicolo
At the very beginning we were excited, but also kind of nervous. Firstly, we climbed up a million stairs, the reason for this was to get to the humongous hall where the Da Vinci was going to be hosted. They told us the rules and where everything was and then….. THE GAMES BEGUN.
NICOLO’S PERSPECTIVE
This day was extremely fun for the three of us with lots of learning opportunities and challenging tasks. I loved this day because this was my first time in Da Vinci and I loved the challenges that it offered. My favourite task was English.
REED’S PERSPECTIVE
I loved this day because there was so much fun and exciting rebus puzzles. Really good learning opportunities for everyone. The puzzles were mind-crushing. My favourite was ideation where we created a prototype to clean up the earth with trash collecting hands that could extend.
EVE’S PERSPECTIVE
This day was so fun, I loved all the challenges ( especially the rebus puzzles). My favourite thing was probably …. all of it! The games at the end were a lot of fun as well. The learning opportunities were endless and my favourite was the creative producers section where Anthony, Reed and myself recreated the moon landing.
There was a real buzz of excitement in the hall as everyone was trying to engage with all of the different activities, lots of noise but you really had to focus hard and collabourate with your team.
THE YEAR 6 EXPERIENCE
Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic event full of challenging tasks and difficult inquiries. You compete in ten disciplines which include Mathematics, Engineering, Code Breaking, Ideation, Science, Legacy, Cartography, Art and Poetry, English and Creative Producers. It’s a buzzing atmosphere and a thrilling experience amongst nineteen other schools from Penrith to Nowra.
On Wednesday sixteen students from St Brigid’s attended the Illawarra Christian School accompanied by Mrs Mewett. My favourite task was Engineering whereby we had to design a rescue drone. We created this by using a prototype using only paper and straws and sticky tape. We also included a detailed reflection on our design features.
Both our teams succeeded by winning awards, our Year Five team achieved an amazing third place in Mathematics out of nineteen schools, and our Year Six team accomplished a stunning first in Mathematics, and a second in Engineering. Overall it was an awesome experience for everyone who attended the day. We are all extremely proud of all of our team's achievements and of everyone who participated.
Congratulations to the following students who have received an Assistant Principal's Award. Well done!

We have had to be flexible and adapt to changing situations within schools and the Cross Country Carnival was no exception with the wild weather we have been experiencing. We had selection trials for Diocesan representation last Friday and all competitors did a wonderful job as they raced the tough course at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens.
Congratulations to the following students who will be part of the team representing St Brigid’s at the Diocesan carnival in May!
Ireland C, Allaria D, Ari N, David M, Tom S, Finn D, Harley S, Zachariah C, Joshua S, Rhiley A, Eve A, Zara H, Hugo S, Rio M, Bailey C, Tayah A, Audrey G, Willow M, Cameron B, Cash S, Noah S, Grace D, Tully D, Georgia F.
We also had some wonderful house spirit in the morning with house chants and some dancing.
