Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,
The Acts of the Apostles is attributed to the authorship of St Luke so it is fitting that this week we also give thanks for the life of St Luke as we celebrate his feast day. Luke is a wonderful example of someone who carried out the mission with the greatest commitment and today we still benefit from the choices Luke made in this pursuit. Luke was originally a Greek Gentile from Antioch, a city known at the time for its high culture and learning. He was a well educated physician who enjoyed high social standing and the many material comforts that life can offer, so his decision to follow Jesus included giving up the many privileges of this life and sacrificing the comfortable lifestyle he enjoyed. Today he is the patron saint of physicians and surgeons.
We appreciate some features unique to Luke’s Gospel including a loving focus on Mary, the mother of Jesus; the Annunciation to Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus and the beautiful prayer of the Magnificat; the Presentation of Jesus to the Temple and then losing Jesus from the convoy leaving Jerusalem. Of particular note at this time of World Mission Month is Luke’s devotion to the poor and a tenderness for those who suffer. Luke took seriously the mission to go out in pairs and announce the Kingdom of God. This is evidenced by all the places he visited with St Paul and by remaining a faithful companion of Paul, the Apostle, in spreading out to accomplish the work Jesus had given them. He was a dedicated disciple of Jesus and models for us what it means to respond to the call to discipleship and minister to others, assuring them that God was present in their lives.
We are each called in our way to announce the Kingdom of God and exercise love towards others and especially, at this time in our year, to those who are vulnerable, poor and marginalised. Every act of reaching out to another, every act of kindness, every contribution to the common good and the flourishing of others is an expression of being a disciple like Luke.
During this World Mission Month, how will you choose to follow the example of St Luke and extend your love to others in our world and carry out the mission entrusted to you?
What this means for students and school staff
- If a student or staff member is unwell and has any COVID-19 symptoms, even the mildest of symptoms, they should stay home and test.
- Students and staff who are unwell with any cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms (whether they have tested positive or not) should not attend school until their symptoms are gone.
- To limit the possible spread of illness amongst the school community, students and staff displaying COVID-19 symptoms at school will continue to be sent home until their symptoms are gone (students and staff with persistent symptoms, e.g. hayfever, will continue to be able to attend with a letter from their medical practitioner).
Steps we can take to keep our school community safe
- The most important step we can all take is to stay home when we have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, and not return to school until the symptoms are gone.
- Please continue to notify the school if your child tests positive for COVID-19.
- We strongly encourage all students, staff and visitors to follow NSW Health guidance. We will continue with the COVID-smart measures that have been in place over the last few terms. This includes a combination of encouraging vaccination, supporting mask-wearing (with masks still required in some settings), rapid antigen testing, ventilation, hygiene and enhanced cleaning

KINDERGARTEN, YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2 MATHEMATICS IMPROVEMENT
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 teachers have been enaging in some exciting new learning in the area of Mathematics. Mathematical Reasoning is when students justify, explain and prove how they solve problems in maths. It involves lots of talk and interaction, drawing and the use of objects and concrete materials to help solve problems. The teachers have started this new new learning and this will be put into practice in the classroom this term in small group instruction, whole class teaching and roving student teacher conferences. We expect that the students will love learning Mathematics with this new contemporary and research based approach to learning mathematics.

RESPECT FOCUS WEEK 2 AND 3: It's NOT a Joke!
Each week, a new respect focus will be announced at the assembly and then this will be taught in classrooms everyday. Students learn what the respect focus is and is not and use scripts and role play to help them understand. I thank the Respectful Relationships Student Advisory group for leading this very important initiative and having a confident voice to speak up for respectful relationships.
It's NOT a Joke is:
- Owning up when you have said unkind or disrespectful words to someone
- Accepting that you have been disrespectful in your words or actions
- Understanding that when I am disrespectful, it is NEVER a joke
It's NOT a Joke is not:
- Saying unkind words to or about someone and when you get into trouble, saying ‘It was just a joke.’
- Saying “we were just having fun, I didn’t mean it.”
- Saying “everyone else was doing it too.”
Weekly Respect Focus - Term 4
- Week 2-3 - It's NOT a Joke!
- Week 4 - Consent
- Week 5 - Respect at the toilets
- Week 6 - Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself
- Week 7 - Healthy Relationships
- Week 8 - Disagreeing Respectfully
- Week 9 - Saying Sorry
LIDS FOR KIDS UPDATE
At the end of Term 3, our Stewardship Leader, Raen presented to the school an update on how many lids for kids the community donated. Please see Raen's report below:
Thank you for your wonderful efforts in helping to make prosthetic limbs for people who need them. A gude thank you to Raen and her family who have taken on this intiative, sorting and donating the lids on our behalf. What an amazing missionary effort from the St Brigid's community. Please continue to bring in the lids, cleaning them first.

As a school community, we ‘kicked off’ Socktober for Mission Month with a prayerful liturgy led by Year 6, with the theme, “You will be my witnesses”. In this liturgy, we heard the message from Pope Francis,
Dear brothers and sisters!
These words were spoken by the Risen Jesus to his disciples just before his Ascension into heaven, as we learn from the Acts of the Apostles: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth” (1:8).
It is a clear message that our responsibility, as children of God, is to respond to the need of others. In 2022, students and their families across Australia will raise funds to support families in Ethiopia facing malnutrition and food insecurity. Our fundraising will help sustain and enrich the lives of vulnerable children who are in need of our support.
The children have accepted a challenge to raise enough money to provide goats to the villages of Ethiopia. The goats provide essential nutrition for the children and extra milk can be made into cheese and butter or provided to local health clinics. Extra milk can be sold to other regions. Each goat costs $50 and each class will need to raise at least this amount to purchase a goat. The more money we raise, the more goats can be purchased.
