Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,
'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'
This weekend, we will celebrate and reflect on the Second Sunday of Advent. As the second candle on the advent wreath is lit, we hear again of John the Baptist preparing us for the coming of the Messiah.
John’s message to us is clear and familiar - he calls us to ‘repent’, to take a look, at this special time of preparation for the coming of Jesus, at the ways in which we might once again turn away from those behaviours and attitudes that make us less than God calls us to be.
John the Baptist also reminds us that “the one who follows me will baptise with fire and the Holy Spirit”. In using these words, John is deferring to Jesus as the one who will bring our lives and faith into a new age of witnessing to the values of God and turning anew towards him.
Individually and as a community we will reflect on how our attitudes and values demonstrate the power of God’s Spirit within us. As John baptises with water those who come to him, so we have been baptised into our faith. This Sunday, we have cause to reflect on how timely it might be, during Advent, to reform and refresh our values as baptised Christians.
Our prayer for this week might be -
Loving God,
Prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus peacefully.
Grant us the power of your spirit,
So that your grace might renew and strengthen us.
We thank you for the message of John the Baptist, the great prophet,
who reminds us to wholly prepare for the coming of the Messiah.
Through Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and forever. Amen.

NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM FOR 2023
Earlier this year the Parish asked parents and carers who undertook the Sacramental Program for 2022 to provide feedback and suggestions for the improvement of our Sacramental program. The Lumen Christi Parish, St Brigid’s and Good Samaritan now offers all children a renewed Sacramental Program that will be more engaging, educationally appropriate, and formative in liturgical worship.
The most significant change is that the majority of preparation will take place during Religious Education lessons at school for students in both Parish Primary schools.
Receiving the Sacraments is a very blessed time in our journey of faith, and it is the means by which baptised children can complete their journey into full membership of the Catholic Church. They are community events, which remind us of the role of the parish community in the development of our life of faith, hope, and love. Our Catholic Schools and Parish are here to help you as parents in your vocation to make known the light and love of God to your children.
Parents are required to attend a compulsory information night at the commencement of the program.

RESPECT FOCUS WEEK 6: SAYING SORRY
Saying Sorry is:
- understanding and accepting that what you have done is wrong
- saying sorry for what you have done
- saying sorry for the way you made someone feel
- saying you won’t do it again
- showing by your actions that you are really sorry
Saying Sorry is not:
- arguing and not accepting that what you have done is wrong.
- refusing to say sorry for what you have done
- not considering the way others feel
- repeating disrespectful behaviour
- pretending you are sorry
RESPECT FOCUS WEEK 7 & 8: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
Healthy Relationships are:
- when someone makes me feel good about myself
- when I feel like I belong and I matter
- when my friends and trusted adults listen to me
Healthy Relationships are not:
- when someone makes me feel bad about myself
- when someone makes me feel unsafe
- when people ignore me and don’t listen to me
Each week, we will have a whole school respect focus that will be explicitly taught. Students will engage in role play scenarios to support their understanding of respect and how to treat each other with respect.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND FAREWELL
My time at St Brigid's has sadly come to an end. I have loved every minute with the amazing students, hardworking and compassionate staff and generously spirited parents and carers.
The past two years have given me an energy I did not know I had and spurred me on to working for excellence in faith, justice and learning with this wonderful community. Your children have shown me that being in a school community as vibrant as St Brigid's is where life and love resides.
I am so grateful for this opportunity afforded me, and I am especially thankful to Kathy Uroda who has been an amazing mentor and colleague. I will always remember St Brigid's, the staff and parish, students, parents and carers. I wish you all a holy and blessed Christmas spent with family and good friends, enjoying the spirit of giving and togetherness.
FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR'S DESK
A huge thank you to all of you for your generosity and kindness in this Advent season. There will be many families grateful for the hamper they will receive in time for the Christmas celebration.
What if this year you did your Christmas shopping differently, with love for our common home?
In his encyclical Laudato Si’, published in 2015, Pope Francis invites us to choose a different lifestyle in a world where “the market tends to promote extreme consumerism in an effort to sell its products” (No. 203).
Isn’t that what happens at the end of every year? Department stores spend big to dazzle their customers’ eyes, and billboards promote gifts (often useless) by the thousands. What if this year, you chose to do your Christmas shopping differently, with respect for our “common home”?
Here are some rules that might inspire you this year.
AVOID OVER-CONSUMPTION
In his 2014 Christmas greeting to the personnel of the Holy See and of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis urged Christians to “ensure that Holy Christmas is never a celebration of commercial consumerism, of appearances or of useless gifts, or of excessive waste, but that it is a celebration of joyfully welcoming the Lord into the crib and into the heart.”
To avoid excessive consumption, why not opt for responsible purchases such as second-hand products? In fact, you can often find new products with their original labels (books, jewellery, toys), but which were not useful to the person who originally bought or received them. You can easily find them at second-hand stores or various on-line resellers.
Also, you can hand-make nice gifts yourself: this is another way to please your loved ones without taking part in the Christmas shopping frenzy. The internet is full of ideas for DIY gifts. Jewellery, macramé, pottery, wooden objects, beauty products … There’s something for everyone! Some are suitable to be made with your children, and others, which are more complex, are better made by an adult alone. Those who don’t know how to sew or knit can always rely on prefabricated craft kits.
CHOOSE TO OFFER AN ACTIVITY OR A SERVICE
We often think of material gifts, but immaterial ones can be just as pleasing. First of all, in this way the living space of the happy recipient isn’t cluttered up with more things.
Also, activities such as an outing to a concert, the theatre, a restaurant, or a museum are not only more eco-responsible gifts but also the promise of shared good times that will be remembered for years. Why not accompany this gift with a small voucher for some service you can give (babysitting, cooking, etc..) or a service to be performed by another service provider (such as house improvements or gardening)?
RESPECT CREATION
In the encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls for the respect of Creation. This respect can be achieved by choosing to buy ecologically friendly products that have less impact on the environment throughout their life cycle (extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, use, and end of product life). Products made from recycled and recyclable materials, “green” beauty products, clothes made of ecologically friendly materials, and seasonal food products contribute to this respect of nature.
ADOPT ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING
Laudato Si’ lists many simple things we can do, including “avoiding the use of plastic and paper” (No. 211). Millions of pounds of gift wrapping paper are thrown away each year at Christmas time. Reportedly, waste increases by 20% at Christmas. This is a phenomenal amount of waste, considering that wrapping paper is relatively expensive and causes pollution because most metallized, glittery and plasticized packaging is not recyclable. To protect the environment, the best way is to wrap your gifts in a sustainable and ecological way (Furoshiki wrapping cloth, brown paper, knitting, used wrapping paper, etc.).

Guide to a Sustainable Eco-friendly Christmas 2022
The best Ways to Have a Sustainable Christmas
Joyful peace is the atmosphere of the birth of Jesus. Nonetheless, the peace arises amid the darker realities of life: 'there was no room for them at the inn'. Peace and joy are messages that we badly need today. More than ever we need to know that the light of Christ shines in the darkness. I wish all our families a happy and holy Christmas.
Thank you for all the support you have given to ensuring that our Catholic values of compassion, courage, service, and stewardship are followed and lived through actions and words.
